Abstract

Popper maintained that induction plays no role in scientific inquiry, practical action or belief formation processes. Developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and closely related fields of investigation, such as machine learning, have been claiming to undermine this view. I shall raise some difficulties for this particular challenge to Popper's anti-inductivism. AI research, no matter how significant for understanding or attaining mechanical intelligence, has not bolstered the inductivist case. Moreover, significant AI achievements in the way of so-called inductive learning can be informatively redescribed in purely falsificationist terms.
